Spiritual Swimming

Deuteronomy 31:6

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the lord your God will go ahead of you. He will never fail you nor abandon you.

Family Vacation

While on a recent family vacation my sons expressed interest in learning how to swim. After arriving at the hotel, the first activity is always the swimming pool. While in the pool the boys were playing in the shallow end, when I told them to come to deeper water. They were both hesitant at first. Then I told them to trust me, and I wouldn’t let anything happen to them. It made me think of our Heavenly Father telling us to come out of the shallow end to deeper water. Our God has already told us that he will never leave us nor forsake us. So many times, in life we decide not to take chances, when all alone we have the greatest lifeguard.

Fundamentals

As the boys made their way to deeper water, we started learning the fundamentals of swimming. The first lesson was learning was how to control their fear. We have to remind ourselves of Hebrew 13:6, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.” Once fear was conquered, we started practicing body movements. I explained how their bodies reacted in water when they moved their arms and legs in particular motions. In the spiritual world we have to practice the same motions. Our arms are raised high to give thanks and our legs constantly moving toward the blessing.

Practicing

After a couple hours of practicing the boys were able to maneuver the water well. They even got to the point where they would touch the bottom and pop back up. This was a lesson that life will make us touch the bottom, but with God we will always pop back up. The excitement on their face swimming is something I’ll never forget. I was overwhelmed with joy!

I believe that’s how our Heavenly Father feels when we take chances and conquer the deep water of life.

Prayer:

Lord, Thank You that You are always by our side. Give us the courage and will to step out on faith and receive the many blessings that You have waiting on us.
